Monday 13th of July 2026. El Hierro.

Safely tied up in Puerto de la Estaca marina where I will stay for the next 10 days at least. My sister Carmel arrives on Thursday for 4 or 5 days and I have a one day free diving course to do.
Estaca marina, El Hierro. Beautiful marina only half full of boats, dead quiet except when the ferry arrives and only €9 per night.
A frenchman arrived this morning, singlehanded in a 40ish foot trimaran. I asked him where was he going to watch the game tonight and he didn't know what I was talking about. I will watch it on my tablet and sadly also the game tomorrow. There is a town nearby but the bus timetable doesn't suit and though they have bars they might not have televisions - just joking.

The one day free diving course was brilliant. After one day I was able to do this, swim 10 metres at 5 metres depth (the video of me didn't work out so this is the other person on the course).

    'free diving' ie. with just snorkle and goggles (not that it didn't cost!)😉

      Very windy! and small and varied. Green in the middle, forested in places and volcanic wastelands in the south. We hired a car and saw it all in a few days. Just waiting for the wind to ease enough to be able to move on.

    Do you know.... I don't think we met one person speaking english there. Only 2 hours (ferry) from Tenerife South, but a whole different world away!

I'm in! At last they found me a place in the marina and I'm booked in until the middle of March. 63 nights at 4 euros per night including water and electricity. No wonder it's so popular, I've known marinas to charge more than that just to plug into the electricity. Time to do some laundry. Tuesday 13th of January 2026. A bit of a kerfuffle here at the marina. Lots of Police, TV camera crews, demonstrators. Liveaboards being evicted. Wednesday 21st of January 2026. Monday 13th of April 2026. La Gomera marina until 6th of May.

Booked in here on La Gomera until 6th of May. A whale surfaced close to the boat on the way over, gave me a bit of a fright. That's the second time I've seen a whale. Saturday 18th April 2026. Took the bus to Valhermosa (seatbelt on) Went for a hike.  Very dramatic landscape.  and landmarks. and a nice bit of Civil Engineering.  Dry stone walling is everywhere here and it's done very well, although these guys have cheated with a bit of cement. I suppose that because they've been doing it since ancient times on the mountainsides with their terraces they have been set standards that have to be kept up.

Friday 12th of June 2026. La Palma marina.

NOMAD (MMSI 232066272), Sailing Vessel | Position & specs Arrived this morning. The pilot book said that this was the most expensive marina in the Canary Isles so happily suprised to only be charged €10 per night,  I've booked in for 6 nights and have to get back before the weather turns again. La Palma is the island that is expected to explode sometime in the future and create a tsunami that will wipe out Americas east coast. There was activity and lava flows here as recently as 2021 but I dont remember seeing it on the news. Friday 17th June 2026. Baranco de Agua. My last hike before returning to Tenerife on Sunday.
