Tuesday 31st of March 2026. La Gomera marina.
Ashore for the first time in a week. I couldn’t get into any of my chosen marinas in Tenerife so have come to La Gomera in the fog.
Good Friday 3rd of April.
You can't see it in this photo but the whole of this mountainside is terraced as are all the mountainsides around here. The terraces are built up with stone walls and are only 2-3 metres wide. So much work for so little gain. Apparently the ancients grew wheat and barley, they couldn't now but the Canary Islands were supposed to have been much wetter in the olden days. Also, you can see the cave where they lived and Mount Tiede on Tenerife in the misty distance.
Not fog, it was the Calima, dust from the Sahara, very thick but not red as I would have expected.
ReplyDeleteHi Brendan. We saw the similar terraces in the Philippines (Banawe)....a UNESCO heritage site. Used for growing their staple, rice. Necessity being the mother of invention etc ..
